Windsor, Canada sits at the southernmost tip of Ontario, pressing right up against the Detroit River with Michigan on the opposite bank. That geography gives Windsor a climate that is distinctive among Canadian cities, warmer year-round than almost anywhere else in the country. Yet fully subject to the lake-effect dynamics of Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair, which can deliver snow squalls, summer thunderstorms, and rapid weather shifts with little warning. The result is a place with genuine seasonal contrast: winters that are cold but rarely brutal by Canadian standards, summers that lean hot and humid, and shoulder seasons that tend to announce themselves in vivid, photogenic ways. Windsor experiences four well-defined seasons. Winter runs from roughly December through February, when temperatures settle below freezing and lake-effect snow arrives periodically in brief, heavy bursts. Spring comes tentatively. March temperatures barely clear the single digits Celsius and April can swing wildly, before May delivers something that feels pleasant. Summer from June through August is Windsor's warmest chapter, with highs in the upper twenties Celsius and a humidity that settles over the city like a warm blanket, softening the pace of everything and making the waterfront parks and river views feel all the more worthwhile. Autumn is arguably Windsor's most photogenic season: September is warm and clear, October brings the maple color along Riverside Drive, and November cools steadily toward winter. One useful thing to know: Windsor tends to log more annual sunshine hours than most of Ontario, partly due to its southern latitude. That said, the proximity to large bodies of water means humidity amplifies summer heat and wind chill deepens winter cold well beyond what the raw temperature suggests. Dress for the apparent temperature, not the forecast number.

Best Time to Visit

Recommended timing for different travel styles.

Beach
July and August are the clear pick. Windsor's riverfront parks and the sandy stretches accessible along Lake St. Clair come fully alive in these months, with highs around 27°C to 28°C (81°F to 83°F) and long, warm evenings. The humidity can feel heavy inland. But near the water there tends to be a breeze that makes it manageable.
Cultural
Late May and September both hit a sweet spot. Windsor's festival calendar builds through summer, the Freedom Festival and the Jazz Festival draw significant attention, and the shoulder-season editions of these events tend to offer the activity without the peak-summer crowds. The weather in both months is comfortable without demanding much adaptation.
Outdoor activity and cycling
May and September are probably the most practical months. Windsor has an extensive waterfront trail system that runs for miles along the Detroit River, and daytime highs in the range of 20°C to 24°C (69°F to 75°F) make sustained outdoor effort comfortable without the summer humidity slowing you down.
Budget
November through March is the most affordable period, when accommodation runs softer and the city's indoor attractions, the casino, the Art Gallery of Windsor, the restaurant scene along Ouellette Avenue, remain fully operational. January and February are the coldest months, so the tradeoff is real, but Windsor's winters are mild enough by Canadian standards that a well-prepared traveler can navigate them without difficulty.

What to Pack

Essentials and seasonal recommendations for Windsor.

Year-Round Essentials
A versatile waterproof outer layer
Weather off the Great Lakes can shift within an hour. Being caught without coverage is a common mistake.

These handle everything from the riverfront trail to Windsor's walkable downtown core.

winter glare off snow and summer riverside brightness both warrant them.

Skip These Items
Leave heavy hiking boots at home. Windsor and its surroundings are notably flat, and the trails rarely demand serious footwear Skip formal evening wear. The dining and entertainment scene runs smart casual rather than black tie Avoid compact travel umbrellas as your primary winter rain plan. They struggle against lake-effect wind, where a hooded coat is far more practical Leave multiple heavy reference guides behind. Windsor's walkable, river-oriented layout tends to reveal itself quickly on arrival
