Day Trips from Windsor
The best excursions and trips you can do in a day
Full-Day Trips
Worth dedicating a whole day to explore.
Pelee Island
USD 50, 70 (fuel, ferry, bike rental)Canada's southernmost inhabited speck feels closer to Ohio than Ontario. Spring and fall bring migrating birds, summer means empty beaches and the island's wineries pour crisp Vidal and Pinot in converted barns. Rent a bike at the dock and you can circle the shoreline in three hours, stopping for Lake Erie perch sandwiches at the West View bar.
Point Pelee National Park
USD 15, 25 (park entry, shuttle)This pencil-thin peninsula is a major flyway. Mid September you might see 50-plus monarch butterflies per tree. Walk the floating boardwalk through marsh marl and you'll spot turtles under the duckweed. Rent a canoe or take the free shuttle to the tip, mainland Canada's southernmost land, and watch both sunrise and sunset over Lake Erie without moving your chair.
Detroit Institute of Arts & Midtown
USD 25, 35 (bus, museum donation, lunch)Diego Rivera's 27-panel Detroit Industry mural alone justifies the tunnel crossing. But the surrounding Midtown neighbourhood adds vintage shops, third-wave coffee and one of America's best indie bookstores. Cross on the Tunnel Bus, walk eight minutes to the museum, then spend the afternoon bar-hopping toward the riverfront QLine tram.
Amherstburg & Fort Malden
USD 20, 30 (fuel, fort entry, snack)This riverside village packs a restored 1812 fort, a navy yard museum and the best patio view of freighters on the Detroit River. After touring the barracks, stroll the Boblo Island ferry dock for gelato and watch weekend sailors weave between the Great Lakes freighters. History here is hands-on: you can black-powder fire a musket on summer Saturdays.
Colasanti's Tropical Gardens (Ruthven)
USD 15, 25 (entry, donuts, plant purchase)A third-generation greenhouse complex turned into an indoor petting zoo, cactus showroom and arguably Ontario's finest cinnamon-sugar mini-donuts. Kids feed koi while parents browse citrus plants you can't legally take home. The attached market ships fresh-picked herbs to restaurants across Essex County, so stock up on lemon grass before you leave.
Belle Isle State Park (Detroit River)
USD 10, 15 (tunnel toll, parking optional)A 982-acre island park five minutes from downtown Detroit that feels nothing like the city. Rent a stand-up paddleboard and circle the yacht basin, visit the free aquarium (oldest in the US) or picnic next to the giant James Scott fountain. You'll get skyline photos with zero entrance fee, rare on the American side.
Harrow & Oxley Estate Winery
USD 40, 60 (tastings, shared appy, fuel)Essex County's newest wine route centres on the micro-town of Harrow, where Oxley's converted 1867 barn pours wild-ferment Chardonnay and strawberry-rhubarb sparkling. Across the road, Colio Estate has a more commercial flight and picnic tables overlooking vines. Between tastings you can cycle the 28 km Chrysler Canada Greenway straight from Windsor's south end.
Half-Day Options
Shorter excursions when time is limited.
Walkerville Brewery & Willistead Manor
USD 10, 15 (tasting, manor donation)Tour the 1930s former distillery, sample a rye-amber ale, then stroll three blocks to Willistaid Manor, an Arts-&-Crafts mansion surrounded by black walnut trees. The whole loop fits into a Saturday morning before lunch.
Sandpoint Beach & Ganatchio Trail
USD 5, 10 (bike rental, ice-cream)Windsor's cleanest swim spot sits at the eastern tip of town. After a dip, follow the lakeside bike trail to the giant peace flag for Detroit skyline selfies. Bike rentals available at the pavilion.
Mackenzie Hall & Olde Riverside
USD 5, 15 (coffee, donation jar)This 1861 brick house turned cultural centre hosts rotating art shows and the best small-stage concerts in the county. Pair it with a flat-white at Anchor Coffee across the street and you've filled a cultured morning without leaving town.
Day Trip Tips
Make the most of your excursions.
- ✓ Border crossings: Detroit tunnel usually beats the bridge for day-trips; Nexus or enhanced licence saves 10, 20 min each way.
- ✓ Ferry note: Pelee Island boats cancel in high wind. Have a back-up plan (Point Pelee beach instead).
- ✓ Park passes: Buy a seasonal Parks Canada pass if you'll visit Point Pelee more than twice, single entry adds up.
- ✓ Bike rentals: Windsor has a new dockless e-bike scheme. But for county trails reserve a hybrid at Bike Windsor Essex downtown; they'll fit a helmet and give paper maps.
- ✓ Essex County road speed limits drop quickly, watch for 60 km/h zones hidden behind cornfields. Cops patrol the winery routes.
- ✓ US side cell roaming: turn off data before the tunnel to avoid surprise charges. Most Detroit cafés have guest Wi-Fi.
- ✓ Winery hours shrink after Thanksgiving. Call ahead November, March, some close mid-week.
